Trying to find a way

A few weeks ago a friend gave me a video tape of her children dancing at a recital.  She asked me to find a way to put it on a file that she could email to her mother.  Well, that is apparently easier said than done!  Apparently first thing I have to do is buy a machine that copies tapes onto DVDs.  Then I have to buy a software program that converts DVDs to WMV files on the computer.  I’ve been looking for a way to do that without spending much money, but it seems that the programs that call themselves freeware really aren’t free at all, and a lot of them have malware on them. 

I’ve been downloading some “free trials” on some of the programs that cost money, but have found that most of them are too complicated (and without instructions) to understand!  And the “free trial” recordings have some kind of writing across the middle of the screen so that you really don’t get a good quality wmv file anyway.  Very discouraging!
