title pic May Day

Posted by Janice on May 1, 2009

Today is May Day.  I remember as a child, we celebrated May Day at school.  We had a fun carnival and played games and danced around a maypole.  It was a day long celebration of spring.  Out of school, we celebrated by gathering flowers from the gardens and putting them in a basket (we called them May baskets) and put them on the doorsteps of our friends and neighbors, ring the door bell and run away.

We no longer celebrate May Day like that, and I understand that it is because a long time ago our government thought that celebrating May Day was in some way celebrating communism.  I think that is absurd, and I wish that people would bring back the May Day celebrations!
