Odd day

May 8th, 2009

Today was a good, but odd, day for substitute driving. I was given a “gravy run” in the morning. A terrific bus – an automatic with an arm rest, cup holder and fm radio! The run was only for a middle school, and the run itself only took 20 minutes to do. Since the rules are that when they send out a sub driver, the sub gets paid for a minimum of 2 hours, I was happy with that run!

Then this afternoon I was scheduled to do a bus run but then the regular driver unexpectedly was available to do the run, so they had me come into base and be on a 2 1/2 hour standby. Standby drivers usually get last-minute runs to do when a driver calls in at the last minute. I don’t like morning standby because it doesn’t give me enough time to review the route so I won’t get lost, but afternoon standby isn’t bad because I know where the schools are to take the bus, and the kids can usually navigate me to their houses. So afternoon isn’t too bad that way. As it turns out, today there were no last minute calls into base, so I got paid to sit in the lounge and read a magazine for 2 1/2 hours.

Yeah, I like days like this!
