Beautiful jars

July 22nd, 2009

I’ve always been attracted to beautiful containers and jars.  One day I’d like to have some shelves installed in front of my windows and fill them up with different sizes and colors of jars and bottles.  I’ve seen photographs of window decorations like that, and I think it is absolutely stunning.  Mixed in with the jars and bottles would be some plants, of course!  The only thing that worries me about jars and bottles is that they can break if you aren’t careful.  With pets and children around all the time, that type of thing worries me!  Probably the biggest reason why I try to make sure that all of my Christmas decorations are made out of things that won’t hurt anyone if they get broken!

A few years ago I took a decorative painting class at the local park and recreation department.  The classes were held in the local high school one evening each week for about six weeks.  I had a lot of fun learning how to paint different patterns on different surfaces.  One of the most interesting project was when we painted ghosts and pumpkins on bulk canning jars.  I thought we would have to use a special paint to paint on the glass, but all we had to do was to to spray the jars first with a matte acrylic sealer.  After we painted, then we varnished the jars and they came out great!
