Temperamental wheelchair door and lift

July 22nd, 2009

Since I’ve been acting as the aide on a handicap bus the past couple of weeks, the driver has asked me to work the handicap wheelchair door and lift.  She said she would take care of securing the wheelchair once the child was safely inside the bus.  I readily agreed, since I seem to always end up banging my head hard on the wheelchair when I’m the one securing it!

Well, the lift has become temperamental lately.  It is an electronic device that is supposed to deploy, stow, and go up and down, depending on which button I press.  The last couple of times I had to use it, it would open up and go down but then refused to go back up again and stow.  Most annoying because the bus cannot be driven when the lift is down!  We’ve had to turn the bus off and on, and play with the buttons several times before the durn thing would start up again.  We’ve taken the bus to the garage and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it.  Those intermittent problems are a real pain in the neck to get fixed, because they don’t act up when they are in the shop!
