I was watching the news tonight and the story of the day that caught my attention was the scandal revolving around the drywall from China. So far people have been claiming to be sickened by it, but there is insufficient medical proof of that yet. I find that hard to believe – that there is insufficient medical proof! Good grief, the stuff has corroded the pipes and wiring in the houses! It has to have had a bad effect on the human body!

That whole story puts me in mind of how it used to be that people didn’t know that asbestos causes Malignant Mesothelioma when the particles become airborne and are inhaled. I learned a lot about that when the office I was working in was being remodeled and they had to seal it up to protect us all from asbestos. I find it appalling that there is still so much of it “out there” that it is still a health threat! But I’m reminded of that every time I see a television commercial for a Mesothelioma Lawyer, advising people that if they suffer from, or know someone who suffers from mesolthelioma, that they should hire a Mesothelioma Attorney to help them to get some financial compensation for their misery.

My New Year’s resolution? Hmmm…. I really hate to make one! OK, how about this one – to try to shop more frugally. And combine trips to town so that I don’t waste a lot of gas and time by making extra trips into town. No, I’m not going to resolve to lose weight! The doctor says I’m at the ideal weight so even though I’d rather be about ten pounds lighter I’m not going to put myself through that aggravation! Um, and to try to get more sleep! I haven’t been getting enough sleep lately, and that makes me cranky! That’s a good one – sleep more! What are YOUR resolutions?

I decided to try to dye my hair last night. I remember trying to dye my hair once about twenty years ago and all I did was make a huge mess. It didn’t cover up the gray and it stained the shower curtain! I was so distressed that I lost all interest in trying it again for a very long time. Well, twenty years is a long time, wouldn’t you say? My older sister suggested that I try one of the cream hair dyes that don’t drip. So I decided to give it a try; the gray hairs I was seeing in the mirror made me look so old and washed out! I bought a box of L’Oreal’s Excellence Creme hair dye. I picked out a box of hair dye that looked like my natural color (dark brown.)

Well, the process took a lot longer than I thought it would take. Most likely because my hair is very long; almost down to my waist. So it took longer to saturate all of my hair. The directions on the dye said to let the dye stay in for thirty to forty minutes. I think that by the time my hair was saturated it had already been thirty minutes for some parts of my hair!

And even though the box claimed that it wouldn’t drip, it did in fact drip. I’m glad I was standing on a black towel and leaning over my bathroom sink because my bathroom has carpeting in it (it came with the house.)

End result – my bathroom sink is now stained (grr…) and my hair is almost black. My hubby loves it. I”m not used to it – next time (if there IS a next time) I’ll pick out a lighter color! Overall I’m pleased that I don’t see any gray hairs! But it is a shock when I look in the mirror!

Yesterday my doctor called me and told me that I could come in to his office today to get my H1N1 flu shot! I was very happy to oblige! I tend to catch just about ever bug that is even thinking about being around me, and I was keeping my fingers crossed that I’d get vaccinated in time to avoid catching the flu! I understand that I’m still vulnerable for a couple of weeks before it “takes effect” but I am hopeful that I will be lucky enough to avoid catching it now. And I’m really glad that the vaccination was free, too! Especially since I’m still looking for a new job and money is going to be tight for a while!

After waiting a couple of days for worker’s compensation to call me back I decided to call them again. The adjuster explained that my worker’s compensation wasn’t closed, it was denied! I was very surprised to hear that – I was hurt on the job! But the agent said that when the accident happened that I was not specific enough as to exactly what pain I was feeling and did not go to the hospital, so the claim is denied! So, lesson learned – all you folks out there – if you are in any kind of accident at work, complain that everything is in major pain and go to the hospital immediately and demand complete X-rays of your entire body!

I was not very happy when I went to get my pain medicine refilled at the pharmacy today. I just received my worker’s compensation prescription card in the mail and went to the pharmacy to ask them to re-bill the prescription that I picked up earlier and to refill the prescription. I told them that I would return tomorrow to pick up the medicine. When I got home there was a message on the answering machine to call them, so I did.

It turns out that the worker’s compensation case has been closed and I can’t get the refill! I don’t know why it was closed; I’m still in pain! The doctor said I would be in pain for 3 weeks to 3 months, so I expected to be able to refill the prescription!

I’ve got a call in to the worker’s comp adjuster that is handling the claim. Of course I had to leave a message for him. I’d like to find out what is going on!

This morning I was given the job as an aide on a special education bus where we drove all over the county picking up elementary school children and bringing them to one central location that has classes for special education needs. It makes me rather sad that so many young children have to spend such a long time on a bus to get to their classes. I know that they live closer to other elementary schools, but due to budget constraints all of the special education children go to one special education school. I thought that was against the law now; I thought that all of the kids had to be “mainstreamed” into the general school population, but what do I know?

Anyway, today we picked up the cutest little boy who has a rare skin disorder. I don’t remember what it is called, but it is supposedly the skin disorder that Michael Jackson claimed to have. This little guy was an asian-american whose skin was mottled to the point where it resembled a giraffe. A large portion of his hair was white, the rest black. He was a cute little guy, but I can only imagine the stares and teasing he will be going through while growing up. It’s rather sad.

I think it is a very sad thing that so many people thought that asbestos was a great thing to use for insulation in so many buildings. It wasn’t until many years after it had become widely used that it was linked to mesothelioma. I had heard that asbestos was a health hazard, but I didn’t know exactly what kind of hazard it was until one of my friends was telling me that she was asked to help do an asbestos inspection of the building that she worked in.

Apparently there are a lot of different ways that asbestos was used - pipe insulation and as tiling are the most popular ways. As long as the asbestos remains undisturbed there is no threat, but if it is disturbed and broken, fibers can become airborne and that is when the problems arise. A lot of people that have been exposed to asbestos have been given a mesothelioma prognosis of either peritoneal or pleural mesothelioma. Either way, it is a serious form of cancer, so everyone should be very aware of their surroundings and report any suspected asbestos problems quickly the proper authorities so that they can be taken care of.
