One of the interesting things about being a sub driver is that sometimes I get a bus run where I have a bus aide. I like to listen to the aide talk to the children as I’m driving the bus. Sometimes I learn something, sometimes I find amusement in hearing the aide talk about things that she thinks she is an expert on. Today was a case in point, I had an aide on today’s bus. She was talking to one of the kids about the American Bald Eagle. I don’t know how the subject got started, but there it was. What I found interesting was that the aide was telling the kid that only the male bald eagle has a white head, that the female has a brown head. Well, I was pretty sure that she was mistaken about that, but she claimed she had read a book about them and it really isn’t a good idea to challenge someone else’s “expertise” when you are behind the wheel of a bus and there is no way to “prove” or “disprove” anything at that moment.

I did, however, come home and look up the American bald eagle, because my curiosity was now piqued. I was glad to see that I was right, both of them have white heads. I don’t know if I’ll ever see that aide again or not, and I don’t know if I’ll bother to inform her of what I found out. Sometimes people get aggravated when you point out to them that they were mistaken, and I really don’t see the benefit of doing that. I used to tell people all of the time when they were mistaken, and I learned that is a good way to alienate yourself from other people. So I’ve started trying to just say “oh really?” and let it slide. What do you think? Is that a good thing, or a bad thing, to “let it slide” for the sake of keeping the peace and getting along with other people?

Thanks for the guest post Michael Urbanek

Four years have passed since the car accident happened that ruined my life. I was on my way home from work when I was rear ended by a car whose driver was too busy talking on the phone to realize that the cars in front of her had stopped for a red traffic signal.

She rear-ended the vehicle in front of me, pushing that vehicle into the rear of my truck. At the time of impace I was in the process of changing the CD in the CD player, since I had already stopped for the traffic light. I was badly injured as a result of the accident, and we had to hire a lawyer to help us to recover the costs of the accident. I wish that we had been able to find a claim calculator on the Internet back then to help us figure out what type of award we might be able to expect from the accident. As it is we still have not yet settled from the accident, and I am thinking that we never will see any money from it.

Today I had to do an afternoon bus run picking up middle schoolers after school and taking them home. When the middle schoolers were in the process of boarding the bus, one of the girls decided to try to make a scene about how the video camera being used upset her. She asked me if it was running, and I told her that it was. She challenged me, telling me that she knew that if the bus was not running then the camera wasn’t either. I told her that if I had the key turned to the “on” position, then the camera was recording, and that the key IS turned to the “on” position.

So then she started getting mouthy about how much it upset her that the camera was running, that she felt that it was a violation of her rights to be recorded. Then she said that she felt violated and told me to turn the camera off. I told her that I was NOT going to turn the camera off, and that there would be no need for her to “feel violated” as long as she kept her shirt down and her pants up! Her mouth dropped open, her eyes bugged out and then all the kids laughed like crazy while she sat down in a big huff. I thought that was a pretty good response, don’t you?

The one great thing about being a school bus driver is that if there is no school, then you don’t have to get up really early in the morning and do a school bus run. And of course, there is no afternoon run either, so you get the whole day off! To me, that is a wonderful arrangement because I like having lots of days off, and the majority of jobs “out there” don’t give that many days off! The bad part is, however, that if I don’t work, I don’t get paid! So I have to be really careful to budget ahead, planning for the school breaks. If the economy gets too much worse, I may have to get another part time job, and I really would prefer not to do that. I like working only one part time job – it gets me out of the house just enough and lets me stay home just enough. I get the best of both worlds with that.

One of the awkward things about being a school bus driver is the split shift that you have to work. You have to do an early morning run, then you have several hours off, then you have to go back to do an afternoon run. With the price of gas up as high as it was this fall, it was a hardship for many of us to have to drive back and forth. Some of the other drivers are lucky and live near where their buses are parked, but I live about twelve miles away, so it really puts the miles on the car fast, and I have to fill up the gas tank a lot more often than I’d like to. Thank goodness the price of gasoline seems to be dropping for now, it is making it less of a hardship to commute.

It is really hard getting up so early in the morning to do the early morning bus run. Being a substitute, sometimes you don’t have a run assigned to you in advance and you have to go into the office and be “on call” and wait for an assignment. If a regular driver calls in at the last minute because of illness or an accident then you are given their run at the last minute. I don’t like that because I don’t know the roads at all and am not given much time to review the route directions to figure out if the directions are right or wrong (they are often wrong.) That also involves getting up at 3 am in the morning to get to the office on time for being on call. That means I have to go to bed at about 7pm the night before. That’s hard to do.

It must suck to have to wear the same old uniform day in and day out. The only good thing I can imagine is that you never have to worry about what to wear that day, only needing to make sure that your limited supply of uniforms are clean and wrinkle free and what shoes to wear. And comfortable shoes can make or break your day, as we all know.

So many of today’s medical professionals can choose from a variety of scrub clothing that we are seeing more and more of out and about in our daily lives, much like the ones that you can find at http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women/. The ones that are geared for the pediatric sector are really cute. I’m sure it makes a difference for the kids that they deal with each day and hopefully cheer up the place as well. Lord knows a busy pediatrics office can use all the cheering up that they can get. I can’t imagine working in that environment with all the crying and screaming kids day after day after day…….

Last summer I bought a digital voice recorder to record myself reading a script that I need to memorize. When not in use I was keeping it in my brief case. About a month ago I went to get it to use it and it was not where I always keep it. Well I have torn the house and briefcase and car apart looking for that durn thing and I cannot find it. I wonder if someone took it and neglected to tell me. I’ve asked everyone in the family if they have seen it, and the answer has been “no.”

So yesterday I broke down and bought a new one. This one cost about twice as much as the first one did; it has more bells and whistles. I don’t know how to use it yet; I am actually a little bit intimidated by it. Being technologically challenged is a sad thing to be in this day and age!

Right now I have a friend, a gal that I worked with a few years back, who is currently looking for houses for rent in Edmonton, which is a real nice part of Canada. She and her husband both are having employment issues and have had some offers up that a way and he has some family there that they can rely on for assistance during the settling in process. I wish them all the luck in the world, hope I get to see them again at some point. The U.S.A. is losing two good people and Canada will be lucky to have them up there!

Even though we lived way up in Maine, which isn’t all that far from Canada, I have to be honest and say that I never had the chance or opportunity to take such a trip up there. Now that we are living way south I don’t know if I’ll ever get up there or not. I have several friends and acquaintances that are scattered here and there that I’d love to be able and visit. Most likely I would never have to spend a dime on any hotel or motel rooms, nor pay for too much food along the way.

I love the fact that you can customize them now online with special photographs that you can upload yourself to make the gift card more memorable – when the recipient pulls out the gift card to use and sees the photograph of the giver on it, it reminds them of the person who gave them the gift – and I think that is wonderful! Or the picture could be of the recipient himself so his brother/sister can’t steal it and claim it belongs to them when they are caught!

This guest post from Werner Rogers

My husband and I thought we had covered all our bases when we opened the doors to our pet store earlier this year. Boy, were we wrong! When the first client got up to the register I realized I had never research credit card or bank card processing companies! I have to tell everyone those first few weeks that we only accepted cash which was not only really embarrassing, it lost us quite a few sales. Now that we have all our ducks in a row I feel much more professional than I did at the beginning but for a while there I think we were both running on fumes. It’s definitely not easy owning your own business and it’s hard being responsible for every little problem that arises that at the end of the day I love being my own boss. I don’t ever think I’ll go back to corporate life, especially since I get to play with adorable dogs all day and get paid for it! Who could ask for a better job?
