I absolutely love living in rural Virginia. I love looking out from my living room window at the cows, sheep, and horses grazing in the fields across the street. I love how quiet the nights are, and how easily I can see the stars because the is virtually no light pollution. But let me tell you, with this blizzard we just had, we had a power outage of seven hours, and even after the power came back on the cable television and Internet did not come back on for almost twenty-four hours!

My entire family was just about climbing the walls because we had no Internet access for so long! I think I’ll be checking out the wildblue satellite internet services to see what their rates are. I don’t want to be without Internet again! I can’t believe how dependent my family has become on it for so many functions – entertainment, communications, paying bills, shopping….. We depend on it so much!

Now that the Internet has come back up on line, the entire family has parked themselves in front of their respective computers. Watching shows, checking their emails, playing games. I have to make sure that the bills I needed to pay got paid! I hope I didn’t miss any deadlines!

My New Year’s resolution? Hmmm…. I really hate to make one! OK, how about this one – to try to shop more frugally. And combine trips to town so that I don’t waste a lot of gas and time by making extra trips into town. No, I’m not going to resolve to lose weight! The doctor says I’m at the ideal weight so even though I’d rather be about ten pounds lighter I’m not going to put myself through that aggravation! Um, and to try to get more sleep! I haven’t been getting enough sleep lately, and that makes me cranky! That’s a good one – sleep more! What are YOUR resolutions?

I sure could use a couple of sessions of seminars with motivational speakers right about now! I find it difficult to be keeping a positive outlook when the job market is so difficult and I’ve lost the job that kept the wolf away from our door! The only thing is that I don’t really feel a true connection with most of these celebrity speakers that try to help people keep a positive outlook. I admit that there are a lot of good speakers out there that say a lot of good things, but their speeches just don’t address the issues that I face.

If I could give a speaker some speaking tips it would be to make sure that you are not just giving a “feel warm and fuzzy” speech, that you actually bring with you information you can pass out that would be helpful to people who need resources to improve their lives. This is a difficult time for many people, and just trying to get people to “feel better” is like slapping a band-aid on a compound fracture. It really doesn’t help very much!

When I was in middle and high school, I took Spanish classes. I had heard that Spanish was going to be more useful to me in my adult life than French would be. Back then those were the only two choices we had! French or Spanish! I learned the language fairly quickly, and did well with it in school, but after I got out of school I moved to an area where there simply were no opportunities for me to use what I had learned. Eventually I forgot most of it. Not all of it, but most of it.

When I moved back into the southern area where I live now, I found that I was exposed to a lot of people who spoke Spanish and some of the Spanish I had learned in school started to slowly come back. Enough so that I could act as a translator on a small scale if I needed to communicate with an ESL student on my bus. There have been times, though, that I couldn’t figure out a translation to fit the need, so I have been musing over the options to me at this time. I really don’t want to take a class; I’m tired of studying!

I’ve been lucky and found a couple of places that offer online translation services, and even found some that offer free translation; some are so quick and easy that you can enter the phrase in one language and it will convert it to the other language. But I’ve also found some interesting services where translations can be arranged for large documents. I think it sounds like a fun job, being a professional translator! It sure makes me wish that when I was in school that the schools had offered more than just French and Spanish!

Who doesn’t love getting free stuff? I don’t know anybody that will turn away free samples of products that they already use or want to try out. I know that I spend a lot of time clipping coupons to save money, so when I find out about any freebies I’m really happy! I have to be careful, though, to make sure that it is for something that I can really use. I tend to be a pack rat and can easily see myself filling up my house with junk I’ll never use just because it was free and I “might” find a use for it sometime! I don’t want to end up on some television show as the star of someone who was diagnosed as a “hoarder” and pictures of my place overflowing with junk!

I love finding out about student freebies and passing them on to my kids and nieces and nephews. Education is so expensive now; the cost of tuition and books seem to be skyrocketing! Whenever I find out about something they can get for free that will help them out in school I will grab it up for them (or tell them about it) so it will make their school experiences better and less expensive.

One of the drawbacks to being a school bus driver is that it is largely sedentary. I’ve noticed that when I am driving my bus run, it isn’t too long before my legs and knees, back and shoulders start to bother me. Those buses are NOT designed for the driver to be comfortable! When I am finished with my run and get out of my seat, I can barely walk!

So I’ve decided that maybe I should exercise more, thinking that if I am more physically fit that I would be less crippled up by driving the bus. The trouble is that I hate to exercise! A good friend of mine has suggested that I take some belly dancing classes with her. She told me that she has been taking belly dance classes in Winchester for a couple of months now and that it has helped her lose an inch off of her waist and improve her posture, too! She said that belly dancing is so much fun that she is in a good mood for several days after the class, and that it doesn’t seem like exercise at all! I went online to see if I could find any belly dance classes in Virginia that were closer to where I live, but I couldn’t find any. So maybe I’ll join my friend and carpool up there with her to the class she takes. It’s probably more fun to take a class with a friend anyway!

I can remember the year that I took Statistics in college. I was married, with two very young children. I worked full time and had a hubby that didn’t help very much with anything. I was studying to get my bachelor’s degree in business administration and I needed to take a Statistics course. I decided to try to take the course during the summer session. It seems that I ate, drank, and slept statistics! Back then we had a personal computer, but I don’t think that the Internet had even been invented!

I think I was born way too early! Students have so many advantages that I didn’t get! I would have been thrilled to be able to go online and get the Statistics Homework Answer to a problem that I was struggling with, or to get a copy of someone else’s Statistics Lecture Notes for a class that I missed. It would have made life a lot less stressful back in that work-filled summer! I didn’t even have time to go outside and weed my flower garden once that summer! The biggest lesson that I took away with me from that course was to never take on a summer session again!

This is the time of year when I have a recurring dream about having to go back to school as a student! Actually, I’m not sure if the dream is more like a nightmare or not! In my dream I go to school and go to the office to tell them that I never got my schedule so I don’t know where I’m supposed to go, or when I’m supposed to be there. Then the office staff tells me that I already graduated and I don’t have to go to school anymore! I wonder if anyone else ever has dreams like that!

Yesterday my sister was given a very large set of brass flatware. I don’t know how many pieces are in it, but it seemed like hundreds and hundreds! She asked me how to polish them, as they seemed tarnished. I looked at them, and to be honest they didn’t look like brass to me – they looked like stainless steel flatware! But the lighting in the room was poor, so what do I know? Well, I’ve never polished brass before, and the thought of hand polishing all of that seemed like a daunting task! So I tried to find out some information on the Internet about it and found one recipe for ammonia and water that you could soak it in. That seemed like the easiest way out to me. The catch is, however, to first determine if it is solid brass or plated. Apparently if you put a magnet to it and it falls off, then it is solid brass. If the magnet stays on it, then it is plated. That made me wonder why some metal will let a magnet stick, while other’s don’t! I guess I should have paid more attention in one of my science classes! Maybe chemistry class? Probably – that was the one I had the hardest time with!
