Yesterday my hubby and I were grocery shopping and noticed that every few minutes the lights in the store were changing in the brightness level. The lights would go low for a few minutes, and then a few minutes later they would go bright again. My hubby was very surprised by that and thought that there might be something wrong and maybe we should evacuate the building. In a way I thought that was funny, but I could see his point. This particular store has been doing this for a few months now, and I just assumed that it was some type of arrangement that the company had made with the electric company to conserve energy and reduce the electric bills.

No one told me for a fact that was the actual case, but I figured that since the electric company has sent out notices to us as homeowners different invitations to participate in differing energy savings programs that included things like that, I felt that was a reasonable guess to make. Of course my hubby was skeptical, but that’s normal for him. I told him if he was worried that he could go sit in the car and wait for me, or for the fire trucks, whichever happened first. As long as no fire alarms were going off, or announcements being made over the loudspeaker I was content to just keep shopping.

I appreciate the guest post, Jewel Rodgers

I recently found the coolest game. It is called ladder golf or blongo ball, and it is a great tail-gating game or game on the beach. It is very simple to make, but I found mine online. I used our Texas Satellite Star Internet to buy my own ladder golf set. I was exposed to the game several years ago by a good friend of mine. He had a group of people to his house for a party, and he took out his ladder golf set. The game is simply three PVC pipes lined up in a ladder. You toss two golf balls connected to a foot-long string at the ladder. Each of the three ladder rungs is worth a certain number of points, and the goal is to earn as many points as possible each round. Each round you get three tosses with the ropes. The game may not seem that exciting, but it really is a lot of fun. Last year some friends and I had a ladder golf tournament, and my wife and I took second place. I’m excited about taking my set to the beach this summer.

My best friend is so whacked out about the earthquake and the hurricane that is expected this weekend that she has decided that she wants out. She is now spending her time online looking for places to relocate her and her son and it sounds like she is interested in Calgary, Alberta. I can’t say that I blame her for being scared. This has been a very scary week for everyone but my goodness they will be so far away that I’m afraid that I’ll never see her again.

I’ve decided to do some research myself on the Internet so I Googled “Rent Calgary” and I have to admit that it sounds like a wonderful place, but I have realized that I know nothing about Canada. I don’t even know if they speak English or French in that particular area. That shouldn’t be a problem with her though since she was one of the rare ones that took French in school while the majority of us took Spanish which we could never figure out why. Maybe she knew something back then that she might one day end up living some where that she could use it, although I’m sure she has forgotten a lot of it by now.

Where ever she ends up I hope that she will be happy and feel good about where she lands. Looks like I’ll have to be saving my money to go and see her instead of saving up for a new TV or a car or a beach get-a-way or any thing like that.

I’ll be glad when my good friend is done with all of her courses that she has been taking online with very popular Walden University that has been taking up so much of her time for almost a year now. I miss her. I know it sounds crazy and even a bit selfish for someone my age to feel this way, but it has had a tremendous effect on me. We have been best friends since the fourth grade so we have a good long standing true friendship. But I’m just so tired of sharing it with WaldenU.edu.

I try not to call her too much, so I have been communicating with her mainly through emails and texting. It has been so long since we have talked on the phone or seen each other face to face that I all most forget what her voice sounds like for heaven’s sake! So I am so happy to accept an invite from her to join her to watch the fireworks tomorrow night in celebrating the 4th of July. This is something that we have done dozens of times through out the years of our friendship and from many, many vantage points all over the country, depending where we are living at the time. And I’m so grateful that we are both at least in the same state for right now anyway, but after she graduates, who knows where she will end up, it all depends where the best money is to help pay for all the education that was required for her to get into her new field of bettering the environment. Her favorite color has always been green!

I know my mom misses them a lot.

Today we heard about a lot of bad tornadoes that swept through Alabama yesterday and did a lot of damage. I heard that some areas of Huntsville were affected, so I tried to call and could not get an answer. I hope they are OK and that its just a problem with the cell towers. I’m going to post something on their Facebook wall and let them know I am trying to reach them.

Every year, our whole family gets together to go Christmas tree shopping at a tree farm that is located about 30 miles outside of town. It’s one of my favorite family traditions and is a great time for everyone to get outside in nature and spend time together.

We went this last weekend to pick out our tree because we wanted to have it ready for Thanksgiving. It’s already pretty cold here, so we bundled up the kids pretty well before heading out. We packed a few games for them to play in the car, set the Security Choice home security alarm, and then made our way to the tree farm.

Once we arrived, the owners greeted us with some warm apple cider. It was the perfect treat for such a chilly day! They gave us instructions on how we could select the tree and which ones we had to choose from before sending us on our way. They also gave us a few tips on choosing a good tree that would hold the style of ornaments we wanted to put up.

After about an hour of searching, we finally found the perfect tree! It was just the right shape and size. We decided it was the one and then got it strapped up to the car, so that we could go home and decorate right away.

My son has a student loan through a company called Nelnet. I make the payments from my checking account. Several months ago I went online to their web page and signed up for the automatic payment plan so that the payments would simply be deducted on the due date, thus ensuring that the payments would always be on time.

Well, something crazy happened to that account – even though I’ve been marking in my checkbook that the payments were being made, they weren’t being made. I found that out when I got a nasty collection call from Nelnet just a few moments ago. I explained to her that I thought he was signed up for automatic payments and that I would go online and issue a payment immediately. So while she was holding on the phone I went online and authorized the immediate payment. I told her that it was already authorized to be paid immediately she got very snotty with me and started to threaten me with action if they didn’t get their money right away.

I told her the payment was already made tonight and that she didn’t have to threaten me. I didn’t hear anything from her end, so I hung up the phone. I don’t need that kind of aggravation; it was a mistake and I took care of it! And I enrolled him AGAIN for the automatic payments, but I don’t think I’ll trust them to go through, and check to make sure they do.
