I was watching the news tonight and the story of the day that caught my attention was the scandal revolving around the drywall from China. So far people have been claiming to be sickened by it, but there is insufficient medical proof of that yet. I find that hard to believe – that there is insufficient medical proof! Good grief, the stuff has corroded the pipes and wiring in the houses! It has to have had a bad effect on the human body!

That whole story puts me in mind of how it used to be that people didn’t know that asbestos causes Malignant Mesothelioma when the particles become airborne and are inhaled. I learned a lot about that when the office I was working in was being remodeled and they had to seal it up to protect us all from asbestos. I find it appalling that there is still so much of it “out there” that it is still a health threat! But I’m reminded of that every time I see a television commercial for a Mesothelioma Lawyer, advising people that if they suffer from, or know someone who suffers from mesolthelioma, that they should hire a Mesothelioma Attorney to help them to get some financial compensation for their misery.

My son has a student loan through a company called Nelnet. I make the payments from my checking account. Several months ago I went online to their web page and signed up for the automatic payment plan so that the payments would simply be deducted on the due date, thus ensuring that the payments would always be on time.

Well, something crazy happened to that account – even though I’ve been marking in my checkbook that the payments were being made, they weren’t being made. I found that out when I got a nasty collection call from Nelnet just a few moments ago. I explained to her that I thought he was signed up for automatic payments and that I would go online and issue a payment immediately. So while she was holding on the phone I went online and authorized the immediate payment. I told her that it was already authorized to be paid immediately she got very snotty with me and started to threaten me with action if they didn’t get their money right away.

I told her the payment was already made tonight and that she didn’t have to threaten me. I didn’t hear anything from her end, so I hung up the phone. I don’t need that kind of aggravation; it was a mistake and I took care of it! And I enrolled him AGAIN for the automatic payments, but I don’t think I’ll trust them to go through, and check to make sure they do.

I think it is a very sad thing that so many people thought that asbestos was a great thing to use for insulation in so many buildings. It wasn’t until many years after it had become widely used that it was linked to mesothelioma. I had heard that asbestos was a health hazard, but I didn’t know exactly what kind of hazard it was until one of my friends was telling me that she was asked to help do an asbestos inspection of the building that she worked in.

Apparently there are a lot of different ways that asbestos was used - pipe insulation and as tiling are the most popular ways. As long as the asbestos remains undisturbed there is no threat, but if it is disturbed and broken, fibers can become airborne and that is when the problems arise. A lot of people that have been exposed to asbestos have been given a mesothelioma prognosis of either peritoneal or pleural mesothelioma. Either way, it is a serious form of cancer, so everyone should be very aware of their surroundings and report any suspected asbestos problems quickly the proper authorities so that they can be taken care of.

This morning I woke up early. Well, not early if I had to do a bus run, but early for a day off! And today was a day off! I had determined that I was going to go grocery shopping this morning to avoid the weekend crowds, so I went ahead and got up, had my tea and breakfast, checked my emails, and then woke my hubby to get him rustled up to go with me. He likes to go grocery shopping with me so he can pick out the junk food he likes that I won’t buy if I shop alone!

Anyway, we provide our own reusable shopping bags. When we were ready to go to through the checkout counter, I recognized the cashier from many previous trips to the store. The last time I went there and had our reusable bags I put all of them on the counter first; in front of the groceries and she had a major conniption fit, telling me that I had to hand the bags to her one at a time, and to wait until she asked for them! Well of course that slows down the checkout process a lot but in the interest of keeping the peace that is what I did.

So today when we got up to the cash register’s conveyor belt I asked the cashier if she wanted us to hand the bags to her one at a time, or all at once. All she did was stare at us and shake her head “no.” that was not a “yes or no” question, so I asked her again. Again she just shook her head no. And again! So I finally said “well, I can’t figure out which one it is you want us to do by you not answering me, so I’ll just put all of the bags in the front and if that’s not want you want please tell me.”

Later on during the checkout process she asked me a few questions, so I know she didn’t have laryngitis! So I don’t have a clue what was up with the silent treatment at first!

I am a big supporter (I wanted to say “fan”) of ceiling fans. I think that they are a great way to help keep a home comfortable and reduce the cost of heating and cooling a home. I think that everyone should consider installing a Ceiling Fan in every bedroom, kitchen, family, dining, and living room. And if they have a “rec room” that would be a good place to install one too.

I like the selection of fans at the website of Hansen Wholesale Ceiling Fans. My favorite one is a Hunter fan that looks like it has banana leaves for the fan blades! I’d love to have one of those in my sunroom! And they have a picture of a ceiling fan that is supposed to go over a kitchen island with pot rack hooks on it that I thought would be great for my kitchen, but when I clicked on the link to get more information about it I got a page that said that they don’t have any information on it. That was a disappointment! My kitchen could use both a ceiling fan AND a pot rack, and I have an island it could go over! Oh well….. such is life. You can’t always get what you want!

One of the things that has surprised me as a bus driver is how many of the kids that ride the bus have asthma! I get notices from dispatch about what kids ride my bus that have health problems that could flare up on the bus – the two largest are allergies and asthma. These kids bring their own medications with them on the bus so that they can self-medicate – in the case of allergies they bring epi-pens, and with asthma they bring their own inhalers. It seems to me that these are situations that are exacerbated by our environment, and that we should take greater measures to control the irritants that trigger them!

Not a day goes by when I don’t drive past some kind of road work being done. Road widening, ditching, and/or underground utility installation. And I drive past many farms where the farmers are doing SOMETHING in their fields where they are kicking up a storm of a dust cloud that could choke a horse!

These projects really kick up the dust! As the world’s population expands, I think that there is going to be a growing need for Dust Abatement and PM10 processes to protect the environment from erosion, as well as to protect the health of the population. Who knows what kinds of toxins could be kicked up in the air for us all to breathe in? We need to protect all of us, and Dust control will be an important part of that protection.

This afternoon I was given a special ed “bus run” that involved driving a Prius hybrid to a city about 50 miles away from town to pick up two “special” children and bring them home. This was the first time I have even driven a Prius. At first when they gave me the key, I thought they had not given me a key, just a remote start. I didn’t realize that the car had a push button starter!

So I asked the dispatchers to send someone out to the parking lot and give me a quick “course” on the Prius. I drove that over 100 miles today, and for the most part I liked it – all except for the one time that I pulled out of the kids driveway to come home and the car simply stopped dead in its tracks. I sure was glad there wasn’t any traffic coming! I have no idea why it stalled out! I eventually got it started again, but I don’t know why that happened! So I’m nervous about ever having to drive it again!

My hubby and I are trying to pinch our pennies and cut down on as many expenses as we can. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to invest some money initially in order to save some money down the road. I think that one good way to invest money wisely in that pursuit is by investing in ceiling fans. Research has shown that by using them to circulate the air in a room helps to cut down on both heating and cooling costs.

I’d really like to put one of those really nice quiet hunter ceiling fansin our family room. I’ve heard that they are the quietest fans you can buy, and I’d like to have a quiet one in there, so as to not have to turn the television up loud or talk loud to be heard over it. I think that since we spend so much time in that room, that would be a good investment to make.

For our bedroom, I wouldn’t mind a little bit of white noise, but I’d like something that isn’t too big, and matches the decor. Something like the monte carlo fans design called “Cheetah.” I like that design a lot!
