Today my hubby suggested that we eat out for supper tonight. But he didn’t want pizza, or chinese, or any of the standard burger joints fast food restaurants. He’s pretty fussy about where we eat, and I didn’t want to spend a fortune on one of the more expensive family restaurants that we like to go to, like Applebee’s or Ruby Tuesday or Outback. So I suggested a little hole-in-the-wall barbeque restaurant that the locals say is the best barbeque in town.

It’s actually part of a truck stop, so the first time we went there I had some reservations about it being a traditional “greasy spoon.” But the barbeque IS the best I’ve found in the area. So I suggested to my hubby that we go there for dinner tonight and he was agreeable to going. I ordered the pork platter, thinking it would be a sandwich but it was a HUGE mound of barbeque pork. I ended up bringing half of it home! That will make a delicious sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch!

It just surprised me to see that many people this early on, but I guess waiting until the last minute isn’t cool either. I can just imagine what the stores are going to be looking like come Saturday.

Funny thing is I’ve never even heard of Nathan’s, but I’m finding that that isn’t so unusual with a lot of the taste tests that I have been running across on Yahoo.com and other sites that I stumble onto.

As far as I’m concerned as long as it is made of beef Oscar Myer is still tops in my book and when I have a coupon and/or find them on sale I stock up on them so they are a pretty cheap food that I’ve been enjoying since childhood. My mother always served Oscar Myer and still does.

But to be fair, ordering Sprite at a restaurant wasn’t good either. Seems to me that they always just gave me carbonated water then – it was nasty.

Tonight I tried a can of cold Sierra Mist. It was really good! I wonder if the problem has always just been that the restaurants watered it down the way they always water down Sprite! One thing I know, if Sierra Mist is less expensive than Sprite to buy at the grocery store, I’ll be buying the Sierra Mist from now on!

Dean came home from work today, totally exhausted. He had to pull a double shift, and he thought that spring allergies have already started on him. Well, I think he is running a fever, and he looks terrible! I think it is more than allergies. I gave him a zinc lozenge and told him to take a shower while I fixed him some won ton soup and a sandwich to eat.

I also gave him a breathe right nasal strip to try out to see if it helps him sleep. I know he said he didn’t sleep at all last night, so pulling a double shift after a sleepless night when you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck doesn’t go easy! I hope he sleeps well tonight, and am thankful that he has tomorrow off of work so he can sleep all day if he needs to.

From time to time I think of things that happened in my childhood, and today I was remembering a summer about forty-three years ago or so when my family was spending a few weeks in the summer cottage on the Northen Neck. My sisters and I had started to experiment with a few different flavors of soda. That was probably inspired by our observations of our mother mixing drinks for our step-dad.

Anyway, we decided to mix Orange Crush with Kickapoo Joy Juice, and we called it Orange Poo. It was actually quite tasty! From time to time I mention Kickapoo Joy Juice to people and they say that they’ve never heard of it! So I just Googled it and found that it is marketed in Asia now. I wonder why it isn’t marketed here in the USA.

The best thing about living in North Carolina? Hands down, the barbecue. It’s hard to say which I enjoy more: Lexington or Eastern style…both offer different things. But my goal for the new year is to try out all the local stops to see just which place has the best flavor. Who knows, I may even make my own domainnames about it to catalog my myriad findings, kind of like that show on TV, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

My wife thinks it’s a little ridiculous, but I’m determined. Especially since you wouldn’t believe how many times our out-of-town relatives stop by and plead for the best barbecue NC has to offer–now I’ll be able to tell them for sure. I might also throw in a little more southern fare into the mix, like fried chicken and greens, just to spice it up a little bit. If there’s one time of year its OK to embrace the love of food, I think it’s now!

A couple of days ago I was watching the Today show and they were talking about something dubbed “shrinkage” that is effecting the size of the products that we are buying. They were talking about how instead of prices going up the companies are reducing the amount of product we are getting for the money. I don’t know about the rest of the consumers “out there” but I feel that is truly an insult to my intelligence. I’ve noticed over the past year how many of the products that I buy have shrunk in size. To be perfectly honest I wish they had just raised the prices. I don’t want to have to buy six boxes of ceral when I used to only buy four. I think that the way they are doing things they are increasing the cost of packaging and increasing the amount of wasted packaging that is going to end up in the landfills. What do you think?

Last night my sister called me from work and asked me to swing by Taco Bell on my way home and bring home some tacos, burritos and Mexican Pizza. It has been several years since I had eaten Taco Bell tacos; to be honest I prefer my home made ones, but I wasn’t going to argue with her. She said she was going to reimburse me for the food, and to pick up some food for myself too. So I agreed. I had never heard of a Mexican pizza before, and I was intrigued.

I ordered a couple of extra tacos and an extra Mexican Pizza. When I got home I tried one of the tacos (not impressed to be honest with you) but I did really enjoy the Mexcian Pizza quite a bit. So now whenever someone says they are going to go to Taco Bell and do I want anything, I’ll say “yes” instead of “no thanks.”

Guest post written by Crystal Atkins

After a wonderful Thanksgiving with our terrific family, my husband and I caught a plane back to Virginia . The weekends always go by so fast. For months you sit around and anticipate one weekend of the year, and when the time actually arrives, it always seems to go by quickly. However, it’s all about the memories you make in that given time period, and we made some amazing ones this year. Our family lives all over the country, but thankfully, we were able to convene at my daughter’s home in Charlottesville. It was hard to coordinate everyone’s schedules, but it all fell into place for Thanksgiving. I’m honestly impressed at how organized we were for this meeting, and we planned a terrific feast, and a number of fun family activities. Everything went great.

Now that we are back in Virginia, we are really missing our family and getting back to our daily routines and regular activities. My husband just bought a new pair of Hearing Aids by Miracle Ear, and I spent some time getting the house back in order. We’ve already decided that we can’t wait until Christmas time comes so that we will all be together for another fun time.
