It is so nice to have a few days off of work! Today is the first day of winter, and I got to sleep in late! I felt wicked, staying in bed until 6am! What a luxury that is! I am usually on a bus by 6am most mornings. Now I know that today is a Sunday, and I don’t drive a bus on Sunday, but I usually still get up really early on the weekends to get my chores done. But, I thought that I’d celebrate the first day of winter by just sleeping in a little bit extra late. Seemed appropriate to me!

Well today school was delayed for two hours due to bad weather instead of closed for all day. That is good news for me because I am only scheduled to do an afternoon bus run today, so at least I have that work coming in. As a substitute, I usually get work every day,but for some reason this week this afternoon is the only day they have for me so far, so I was a little bit concerned that today would be canceled and then I’d have no income at all this week! Normally I’d be happy for the entire week off, but I just had two weeks off for the Christmas/winter break and I haven’t budgeted for this week off without pay too!

I heard the weather report yesterday that we were going to have freezing rain today, so I anticipated that school might be canceled today. However, many times the weatherman is wrong and so I still had to get up early and get ready for work, not knowing if schools would be open or not. The person in charge of deciding whether or not to cancel school does not make that decision (normally) until 5:30 in the morning. After that, the announcements get posted on television and radio.

That’s all fine and good for parents, students, and teachers, but not so good for the bus drivers because most of them have to already be in their buses, starting them up by 5:30 in order to get on the road to pick the kids up on time. I find that many times I am already in the bus before they have made that decision to close the schools, and it is very annoying because I had to drive the treacherous roads from my house to the bus, and then back again in very bad whether and I don’t get paid a penny for having shown up to work and then sent home! I think that they should make that decision by 5am so the bus drivers can stay home too!

So that is what happened today. I was on the bus, having started it up ready for the run even though the roads were bad. A few minutes later, I get the news on the radio that schools are closed, so I had to turn off the bus and head home, aggravated that I had to scrape my cars windshield and brave the bad roads just to get sent home without a dime to show for it!
